As a leader, being able to use their tools when needed is paramount to freeing up mental energy necessary to take on the multitude of tasks in their role. Developing skills to sustain or enhance an organizational approach can increase effectiveness and efficiency.

The pillar of reliability is a cornerstone of both being perceived as a leader and the ability to garner trust. To be reliable means that behavior, thoughts, and influence are directed towards successfully achieving the individual and organizational goal. Being able to execute tasks through adversity, uncertainty, and limited information can be difficult without the proper tools. Learning how to leverage reliability for completing tasks and influencing others to achieve more is a critical component of leadership.

A lack of curiosity is the conventional linear marching approach of the British during the Revolutionary War; effective in certain environments and conditions, however when tactics and technology advance, the approach becomes severely inefficient. The curious pillar is not only about learning. To be curious means to be truly open to exploring strengths and weaknesses. To be curious means that leaders are willing to try new tactics and ask questions about why they worked or did not work. To be curious means leaders want more.

Although the behavior associated with adaptability is to change, what is actually achieved is finding the right traits and solution that fit a particular set of stimuli defined by the task, environment, and culture. Developing adaptability begins with being able to identify those necessary stimuli, then to utilize strengths and tools to fit the desired outcome. When preparation and adaptability are successfully integrated, a leader’s confidence in their ability to achieve an outcome is enhanced.
